We recently spoke with Cheryl Bearden, whose mother, Barbara Parker, lives in The Village at Gainesville’s Jasmine Pointe neighborhood. We wanted to hear Cheryl’s perspective on the difference that assisted living services have made in her family’s life. This is what she had to say:
“My mother had had some health issues, and after a stay in rehabilitation, it was clear that she wasn’t going to be able to return to her house. She was living by herself in an apartment and it wasn’t possible for her to live by herself. We started looking for assisted living services in the Gainesville area where we live, and decided to look into The Village.
We had heard about The Village before. It had a good reputation in the community and some people from our church lived there and were happy there. We visited the community and it just so happened that they had a room available for her. The food was very healthy. The people were very friendly, and it was a nice big community. The care services provided were great. Knowing some of the people who lived there was a big plus, too. We liked what we saw, and so we decided to choose The Village.
Living at The Village has helped her to keep active. We think exercise is really important, so we have someone who comes five days a week; they walk two days a week, and they go to strength training three days a week. It keeps her active and in shape. The Village has a lot of activities, and even if she can’t participate in them all, this helps her stay active. One that she really likes is the trivia class.”
Having her at The Village, as dependent as she is with medication and meals, really frees me up so that I can keep my job. It’s a big plus for our whole family to have her here. She’s in town and I’m in town every day, so I’m over there quite a bit, but I now have enough free time for work and other commitments.
Everyone is so friendly at The Village! They always take care of what their residents need. Mom likes it there, and she’s so comfortable. She likes where she lives. They treat her well and the staff is so friendly. She really is happy at The Village.”
